MOTOR SMASH.

Early on Saturday morning a large coupe car driven by Master C. E. Johnton of Main Road, collided with one of the Power Board's poles opposite Knox Church. The driver was returning home after driving some friends to Wellington who had been visiting his mother, and it is believed that he was momentarily overtaken by sleep. Mr. Jolmston had a miraculous escape as lie escaped without injury. The car was travelling at about 30 miles an hour and it is estimated that it struck the pole with a force of between 40 and 50 tons. The pole presented a most unusual sight after the accident as it was not broken but splintered so that one could see through it and at the same time was lifted 7ft out of the ground. The car was taken to Mr. Fisher's garage where it will undergo repair. It is most remarkable that although the ear was a closed one no glass was broken. The Power Board's gang was quickly on the scene to repair the damage.
