RUGBY NOTES.

FOURTH GRADE

Wellington A 6 v. Hutt A .0. This match was witnessed by quite a fair number of spectators, who were treated to a very bright game of football. The standard in this grade is usually of a high order and the display ; given by these teams confirmed this opinion. The "Wellington team ia a good all round combination and was infinitely superior to the local boys in the scrums, the latter did better in the second half. The city team realise the full value of plenty of weight in the scrums and did not make the mistake of breaking up too quickly. Their half saw X>lenty of the ba.ll and made good use of it. . This player (Hislop) is easily the best player in this position in the fourth grade, and it is a mystery how he missed rep. honours. The local players have given better displays, especially on attack, the half back was too slow in gec~ting the ball away which hampered the work of his" inside backs. Killeen and Hansen were the pick of the rearguard, being, very nippy on attack and cutting in very nicely at times. The latter player is probably the most promising centre in the club, and as he is growing into quite a big lad, should go far in the game. Ivilleen is another very healy jplayer, good on attack and def eifee, and seems to be able to stand the hard staff well. This boy is growing very fast, so .in point of view of physique should be well served for a good career as a footballer. Ross was not quite as .good »s usual; he showed a little hesitation at iames, when he should have gone straight -ahead. Of the forwards Baker impressed most for his solid all round work. We •understand that the senior coach has this boy ear-marked for a place in next year's team, so we hope the rumour that he is going to play for Petone next year is not • correct. He would be well advised to stick to Ms own club, where his services will be appreciated, than give a rash pro.mise to some individual who is not in a position to give 'any guarantee for Ms club that a player will be certain of a place in a particular team. We would remind players of what happened to a •certain player from another club who eventually found himself left out in '.ho cold. We note that he is^now back with his old team and is not likely to leave it again. The present coach of the sen- ( ior team is out for young players all the time and boys like Ross, Hansen, Killeen, Feeney, Baker, Perkins, Wright and others who show sufficient promise will all be considered when they get out into the open grades. Players such as the above are what we are looking for to make-up the Senior A team when we get back to that grade and with their help hope to stay there. It can be done if they, all take their football seriously and rare always on the look out for new tactics to employ <..IThey can learn quite a lot at representative matches, by watching the play of the leading lights and doing their best to emulate any stunts or clever play, usually seen at these games. Reverting to the match against Wellington, there is one phase of the pliy wMch was of a very Mgh order, and that was the rush stopping. Feeney Bros., Hansen and Killeen all got down to rushes fearlessly, which, was the subject of much favourable comment on the side line. The curtain-raiser between the B teams of both clubs was not a very scientific affair. However a few promising players were noticed. Wright, in the backs, was the best boy on the local side, and is very game. Reid was playing out of his usual position, but did fairly well. Spencer (a fifth grade boy) showed promise as a half back. Evans was the outstanding forward, with Coe and Spencer working hard. The annual smoko has been .fixed for Saturday, the Bth September. Admission will be by ticket only, except in the case of Fourth Grade players and under. The subscription for these players has been fixed at 2/6 and 4/6 for all others. A good musical programme is being ar-

ranged and we hope that the President (Sir. Alex. Roberts), will be able to preside. Further details will be published next week. TROPHIES. The James Cup has been awarded to the senior team, which finished up the season with the best record. E. C. Russell's medal for the best disciplined player in the senior team lias been allocated to H. A. Smith. ' Mr. Matthew's trophy for the most improved player in. the senior team, has, on the recommendation of the coach, been awarded to W. E. Jarman. I It is intended to present these tropMes at the smoko. * * # * The parrot raffled by the fourth grade players, has, we understand, been won by K. M&Entyre. We are sure that Mac will cure it of all its bad habits. * * * -jfIt is well known that a large number of men from other districts will be transferred to the Hutt Valley Workshops between now and the new year. Many of these are single men who will require board, and from the club's point of view it is desirable that they take up residence in the Hutt. However, it looks as though1 they will have to go to Petone to reside as board and residence seems to be at a premium in Lower Hutt, unless some one is contemplating the erection of an establishment witMn reasonable walking distance of the Shops. No | doubt some would prefer to live with 1 private families; in any ease those able to cater for these men should advertise the fact in Hutt Valley papers, as well as those of Auckland, Napier, Wanganui, Christchureh and Dunedin. ' * * # * We note that Peck, George, Fisher, and Jarman are to train for the Senior B. reps, and we hope that they will all find places in the team or at least take part in the match If George is played in Ms right place at five-eighths, we hare no doubt that he will make good and we reiterate the hope that Jarman will be given an opportunity to show Ms capability as a full back. * * * * Committee men are notified that this week's meeting will commence sharp at 7.30 p.m.
