LOWER HUTT CIVIC ASSOCIATION.
The monthly meeting- of the above Association took place recently, the president (Mr. Strong) being in the chair. A deputation from the Taita Ratepayers' Association attended and gave details of an attempt by the Hutt River Board to alienate a public reserve—the local residents having obtained a Supreme Court injunction against the board in regard to the matter. The meeting decided to support the Taita candidate (Mr. Hewer) at the ensuing- by-election.
A great deal of discussion centred round the recent Borough Council byelection. The Town Clerk not beingavailable on nomination day to give advice was a matter which required explanation, according to several members, as one candidate's application was rendered invalid. It was submitted that the Local Election and Polls Act, 1925, under which elections
are held, required amending to provide that nomination papers shall state the money-deposit to be paid by a candidate. The neglect of the Borough Council in allowing the new cycle track to finish with a sudden drop to the road of nine inches was condemned. The secretary was instructed to request the council to remedy the defect as cyclists were having accidents.
