BUSY BURGLARS.
Three shops, occupied respectively by the Self-Help Grocery Co., the Hutt Meat Co., md Mr. G. E. Grantham, all adjoining and situated in Ludlam Cres ,-ent, Lower Hutt, just north of the Ran) wick Road ramp, were broken into on Friday night last. From the Selp-Help store several packets of tobacco were taken; from the Hutt Meat Co., a quantity of meat, and from Mr. Grantham's about £3 in cash was taken from the till. Entrance to the Self-Help shop was made by breaking away almost the whole of the upper part of the door, as the lock resisted the efforts to break it. The Hutt Meat Co.'s shop was entered by breaking one of the glass panes of the door and opening the lock. Grantham's was entered through the fanlight over the door. The matter is in the hands of the police.
To which latter information this journal might add that several suspicious characters —one with a long list of convictions for petty theftshave been seen hanging round the town since last Trentham races, and may have given a little attention to the vicinity of the recent trotting meeting by way of a change. Their departure or apprehension is greatly desired.
