MINING NOTES.

Mr 11. Mitchell, of the firm of Forster and Mitchell, mining engineers and surveyors, Piieroa, arrived in Kotorua on Monday and proceeded to Te Puke to inspect some properties in which his firm is interested. A communication was received from the Mines Department in reference to the application for ti prospecting license for the Horohoro block. Further communication with the Department was decided on. A prospector engaged by the Association is expected to arrive in a few days. Messrs J. I Philips and Co., mining surveyors-, Auckland, have, in addition to their branches at Paeroa and Thames, opened an office at Ring's Road, Coroniandel. The Rotonia Prospecting Association notify that the second monthly subscription is no-.v due and must be paid on or before Friday. A general meeting of members takes place in the Grand Hotel on Saturday night. » Mr Clem. Comes, an old comrade of Col. Roberts in the Forest "Rangers, was in Rotorua last week on mining matters bent. Regarding a group of natives who had assembled round the Courthouse on Friday last he remarked to an old bro-ther-in-arms —" Wo used to be paid seven bob a day for shooting these fellows, but if we did anything of the sort now we would be hanged for it." Mr Malcolm Fleming is at present in Rotorua. He is accompanied by a prospector and purposes spending a few days here in order to ascertain the nature of the country rock and the probability of finding auriferous strata. He is in possession of information regarding various localities near here where quartz reefs are alleged to have been discovered, and these will be visited.
