A PETTY BURGLARY AND A SPEEDY CAPTURE.
Rotorua bids fair to be pretty well represented on tlie June calender of the criminal sittings of tlie Supreme Court as in addition to the men charged with the robber}' at the Post Office and that at the Geyser Hotel, Whakarewarewa, another individual was this morning committed for feloniously entering and stealing from the premises of Mr Williams, Arawa Street. The evidence taken before Mr Malfroy and Dr Cinders this morning disclosed the fact that on Mr Williams entering his store on Monday morning l o discovered signs that some intruder Ji- d been on the premises overnight. In overhauling his stock Mr Williams missed various articles in tlie shape of wearing apparel, blankets, <£c., to the value of over £ij besides a small amount of money from the contents of tlie till. The matter was at once reported to Constable Murray who too'* steps to assure himself that no suspicious stranger was departing by the morning train. From enquiries made suspicion centred round one individual, a stranger to the place, and, a close watch was kept over his movements. As it was quite evident, however, that this wary individual was watching the movements of the police more closely even than he was being himself observed Master Charles Murray was detailed to take up the task and the lad performed his duty with an iutelligence certainly in advance of his years. For several hours he followed 011 the trail of his quarry till lie saw liiui approaching and concealing a small parcel which 110 carried in a swag that lay hidden amongst the shrubbery in the Public Square. The lad immediately reported the circumstance to his father and the man, who gave the name of Thomas Tremain, was taken to the lock-np. The swag was, found to contain the articles missed from the store comprising a couple of suits of clothes, two rugs or shawls, hat, towel, &.C., —all identifiable. After the evidence had been read over to the accused he admitted having taken the articles from (he store and stated that he had sold one suit to a native named Simon. He was thon formally committed for trial.
