A despatch dated Portland, Oregon, July l'J. siy*;-—The Western Packiug Company's horse-meat canning establishment in Linton, the only ore uf the kind in existence in this country, began uperations to-day. The plant is equipped with about 10,000dol worth of machinery for slaughtering, packing and shipping meat. The first batch of horses was shipped here from Arlington a few days ago. About tea ■were killed to-day. The railroad companies havo been asked to make a rate on canned horsi meat in carload lots to the East at Idol per 100. Special rates have been quoted on live horses from Idaho and Arizona to Portland, am), according to this, prospects for the market seem good.
