A DETECTIVE'S LIFE IS NOT A HAPPY ONE.

Detectives Maddern aud Marsack met with a tough customer in a second-hand dealer in Christchurch, whoso shop thoy were searching for stolon goods. Upon interviewing the proprietor of the shop, ho, it is said, became very abusive One of tho detectives seeing a coat which answered the description of one that was wanted, picked it up, and tho man immediately snatched it away. When asked where ho had obtained it, he remarked that they might as well ask him where he got the shop. Tho search warrant was thou produced, and tho man attempted to snatch it away from tho detective, and defied them to search tho premises. Do then picked up a gorsa knife which was standing close by, aud made an attempt to strike Detective Maddern with it, but Detective Marsack seized him from behind and secured tho weapon. The man then rushed into the back part of the promises, and as it was thought ho was going to get some other weapon, and us he appeared to bo desperate, Detective Marsack followed him closely and seized him. He closed with the detective and endeavoured to throw him, but Detective Maddern camo to the rescue, and the man was secured and band-cuffed, not, however, before he had dug his linger nails into one of 1 >etectivo Maddem's wrists, inflecting injuries that required cauterising by a surgeon. After the man hud been secured, several articles of clothing, which wore afterwards identified as hiivinglieenstoleni'rom Mr Armstrong's shop, were found on his premises.
