At a meeting of fanners held at the Lower Hutt on Saturday evening on the anti-Chinese question, the following resolution was carried unanimously : —' That this meeting of farmers and others interested in market gardening form themselves into an organisation to devisp and put into operation a scheme to place upon a better footing the fruit and vegetable industry by supplying through Europeans the public of "Wellington with fruit and vegetables.' In connection with the above, a meeting held in Wellington on Monday evening resolved 'That this meeting approves of the establishment of a central depot for the distribution of vegetables, fruit, etc. Mr Joyce is to aßk the Premier, "Will the Government, during the recess, set up a Royal Commission to enquire intn and rennrt ijnon the whole system of legislation and administration of tho licensing laws of the Colony, BUeh report in particular to deal exhaustively with the question of brewers being landlords, or having any control of licensed houses, and the question of publicans paying only the rental of their premises which •would be payable if uo license were attached thereto ? Mr G. W. Kuasellsaid in the House on Thursday evening that on a recent visit to the Chinese quarter in "Wellington, he saw in a house in Taranakiotreet some CO or GO Chinese playing fan tan. In another place he saw Chinese packed in bunks one above the other smoking opium; looking like so many rats in their holes. His yisit had convinced him that at the present time the Chinese in Welliogton needed very much closer supervision by the city authorities than appeared to be given them, lie could not bear the stench of the places he went into.
