THE EVIL OF SMALL CONTRACTORS.
In the District Court at Xew Plymouth last week Judge Kettle drew attention to the pernicious conditions under which trade is carried on in the colony. Ho said that contractors without any capital went in for contracts, and cut down prices below a payable point, and, in nine cases out of ten, they found themselves in the Bankruptcy Court. In other businesses also, people without capital too frequently entered into competition with others who had capital to lose, the result being, in many cases, that both became bankrupt. His Honour said to enable a man to carry on business in a legitimate way—pay 2Us in the £, and live honestly—ho must have something to fall back on when the ordinary misfortunes of life or business overtake him. His Honour considered it was the duty of the Bankruptcy Court to endeavour to put an end to this state of things, and intimated that he intends to enforce his views as far as the law allows him.
