A KING'S TRYST

Each year, on August 20th, the King of the Belgians makes a pilgrimage of remembrance to the Queen Astrid Chapel, on the lakeside, at Kussnackt, near Lucerne, where the beautiful young Queen met her death in 1935 in a .motor accident.

The little chapel is open on each 29th of August, and is visited by people from many parts of Europe. On that day, in addition to the floral memorials personally brought by the King, the chapel is converted into a bower of blooms, chiefly gladioli, sent and brought by distinguished friends of the Royal Family", and by r many’ Belgian Societies and citizens.

The east window in the apse of the chapel is of stained glass, and depicts the Queen in her bridal dress, with her husband, the King, a shadowy figure in the background.
