RUGBY FOOTBALL.

HOROWHENUA DISTRICT UNION COMMITTEE MEETS Mr. J. Gillespie presided at this week's meeting of the management committee of the Horowhenua Rugby Union. There were present: Messrs J. Quinn, R. G. Henderson (referees' delegate), J. B. Bateman, C. Beatty, S. Kobbie, A. H. Holder, A. J". Devonshire, W. Seymour, N. W. Ryder, Nepia Winiata, J. W. Rimmer (treasurer) and J. Casey (secretary). A deputation representing the Levin Ambulance Division and consisting of Messrs 11. L. Jenkins and H. Palmer waited on the meeting to acquaint members of the work it was doing in attending to players injured on football grounds of the district, and sought the union's assistance in defraying its expenses for materials, which last season amounted to about 30s.

Having made a donation oi Ills (id, members generally were of the opinion that any additional assistance was a matter for clubs whose players received the beneiit. Delegates were recommended to bring it before tfheir clubs.

Levy On Clubs After giving notice of motion at the previous meeting. Mr. Devonshire moved that the motion making a levy of £2 2s on clubs towards referees' expenses be rescinded, and the matter be brought before the next general meeting of the union. It was seconded 7:y Mr. Beatty.

Mr. Rimmcr opposed the suggestion and pointed out that the levy was essential if the union was going to meei its financial obligations. Mr. Henderson advised that the Referees' Association supported the proposal of a levy. Messrs Devonshire and Beatty held that the union had been able to meet the expenses in the past, and considered that it could do so this season. The motion was lost on a majority vote. Representative Gamss The matter of a game with Poverty Bay, at Gisborne, on June 17th, was deferred to permit an'estimate of the cost to be obtained, and ascertain whether players would contribute to the expenses. The following games were approved: v. Nelson, at Levin, on August 9th; v. Hawke's Bay Colts, at Levin, on September 6th. Forthcoming Games On account of the Otaki races no games will be played next Saturday, except in the third grade competition, which will open with the following fixture: Shannon v. Foxton, at Easton Park, at 2.50 p.m. Wanderers have a bye.

The draw for Saturday, May 20th, is as follows: —Senior. —Athletic v. Rahui, at Lt-vin; Foxton v. Wancwrers, at Easton Park; Kuku-Manakau v. Shannon, at Shannon. Northern juniors: Athletic A v. Foxton, at Foxton racecourse; Shannon v. Wanderers, at Rugby Park; Athletic B, a bye. Southern juniors.—Rahui v. Otaki, at Rahui; Kuku-Manakau v. Waimeha, at Manakau; Te Horo v. Paraparaumu, at Te Horo. Third grade. —Wanderers v. Foxton, at Levin Domain at 1.30 p.m. General i The Otaki Borough Council, in reply to the union's request for the use of, the domain, advised that- at its last meeting it was decided that a committee meet representatives of the union to discuss the question of rental and other matters. —It was resolved to suggest that the council's committee attend a meeting of the union. A letter t'rom the Oroua Unioi. thanked Horowhenua for its hospitality laM year, and suggested a return match this season at Kimbolton. —Held over until representative fixtures were decided upon.

The Otaki Club made application for the reinstatement from senior to junior status of Mason Johnston, R. Nicholls and "Bun" Tahiwi— Not granted. The Rahui Club expressed regret that it was unable to field a junior team last Saturday, due to illness among players. It was decided to impose the usual fine of 5s for not notifying the default and ask the club to pay the referee's expenses.
