ART UNION WINNER.
FIVE YEAKS OF HARDSHIP (By Telegrarjli —Presa Afliocmionh WHANGAEEI, May 9. Mr. E. Stewart, of Ewings Road, Whangarei, a miner who has not been employed in a mine for tire past five years, finds it very hard to realise that he is a comparatively rich man this morning. With the nom-de-plume "Optimist" he has won £2OOO in "You Never Know'' Art Union.
Mrs. Stewart, who heard the news over the radio, was shaking with excitement when her husband arrived home from work. Since he w T as thrown out of employment at Hikurangi five years ago, Mr. Stewart has known hard times. He has been employed at various types of casual work until about 18 months ago w T hen he obtained a labouring job with the Whangarei Lime Co. There are three young children. Mr. Stewart said this morning that he had obtained a tunnelling job in the Hawke's Bay district, which will commence at the end of this month. He has been saving from his limited earnings to make th'e shift. "Now I'll be able to move to Hawke's Bay without much difficulty," he commented.
