The rural population of the dWtrict is 25,20" and its distribution and flie percentage of increase in the ten-year period 1920-1930 is as follows in the various counties:—

While Foxton among the towns lias actually shown a decrease during the period under review, Palmerston North has added to its numbers by almost a quarter and Otaki by 12.52 per cent., the total urban population being 33,759, which is 8134 greater than the combined figures for the counties.
Of the counties Kairanga has made by far the greatest strides in populatioc showing an increase of 18.90 per cent as against 7.4(1 in Horowhenua, the next largest. Apart from the case of Fox ton the gain in the towns is in every instance greater than that in the counties.
