A NIGHT OF GAIETY.

ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB’S DANCE. With-the interior of the Regent ballroom transformed by an ingenious scheme of decorations in the colours, a very attractive setting was provided for the Athletic Footballj Club’s first dance of the season, which’ was held last evening. There was a 1 very large attendance of dancers, visitors being present from the various outlying towns, it being estimated that there were over 200 couples on the floor. j A feature of the occasion was the snappy music provided by a professional combination of five players from Palmerston Nortli. Each player gave of his best, and the proceedings were soon moving at a merry tempo under the direction of Mr. J. O’Donnell, who acted as master of ceremonies. Competition dances were won as follows; Spot foxtrot, Mrs. B. R. Way and Mr. F. Street; spot one-step, Miss Y. Harvey and partner; lucky gay gordons, Miss A. Kemp and Mr. E. Stevenson. During the evening the president of the club (Mr. J. B. Bateman) said it was very gratifying to see such a large number present, and included among them members of every club in the union. He extended a very warm welcome to everyone and expressed the hope that the evening would be a very enjoyable one. He thanked the members of the committee for their untiring efforts in carrying out the arrangements for the dance and the ladies’ committee for their work in connection with the dispensing of supper. The president of the Horowhcuua Rugby Union, Mr. J. Gillespie, said that the Athletic Club was noted for its fine sportsmanship both on and off the field of football. He thanked the club for extending an invitation to both he and Mrs. Gillespie to be present and added that he looked forward to a very successful Rugby season. As president of the Shannon Club, Mr, A. Gillespie thanked the club for organising such a first class dance and complimented the committees who were responsible for the success of the function.

A dainty and delectable supper was dispensed by the ladies’ committee consisting of Mesdames H. Frew, A. Bond, W. Meddiugs, A. W. Swan, C. Beattie, Bateman and Misses I. Frew, J. and B. Goldsmith, L. Meddings and K. Bateman. The decorations were carried out by Messrs J. O’Donnell, E. Meddings, I’. O’Donnell, B, Leger, M. Heappy, E; Goldsmith, M. Woollett, M. Wilson, M. Meddings, W. Galloway and J. Stewart. This is the first function at which the club has had the assistance of a ladies’ committee and the help which they rendered is deserving of special mention. The function was brought to a close in tlie early hours and so successful did it prove that the club’s reputation for organising in the social realms will be very considerably enhanced.
