LEADERS IN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) Received Thursday, 10.0 p.m. SYDNEY, Sept. 9. Five players share the lead at the end of the first round of the Australian open golf championship which is being staged at the Australian Club links, Kensington. But for an unfortunate occurrence,, Nettlefold, Tasmanian champion, would have led the field outright. He played a wrong ball to the first green and was penalised two strokes. He had a stroke round of 71. Leaders at the end of the first round are:— McKay, Eac, Crook, Eufus, Stewart, F. Bolger, 72. Nettlefold, G. Naismith, Von Nida, Bourke, 73. Boorer, Booth, Bradshaw,, W. Campbell, Pettersofi, Walker, H. Williams, Wishart, Harvey, 74. Perrier, C. Gray, E. Cremin, 75. W.'Holder, 76. Whitton, Keane, Richardson, 77. Hattersley, W. Bolger, Ward (New Zealand), 79. Godby (New Zealand), 97. Ward played excellent tee shots but early was astray with his approaches, making several visits to the bunkers. Later he missed half-a-dozen short putts but generally played very sound golf. Godby started with an eight at a par four hole and thereafter played completely without confidence, being frequently in the rough. He also took three putts at a number of greens. Perrier disappointed, being erratic 'with his irons.
