(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyrighr,) Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. NEWCASTLE, July 18. The New Zealand hockey team defeated Newcastle by three goals to two on Saturday. . In view of the visitors ‘ indifferent showing in -the previousgames it was anticipated Newcastle would win, but New Zealand although below international standard recorder' a one-goal victory. The local side were last and scientific and could press inter State teams, but New Zealand, thank.-, to Clark and Mahoney, repulsed their dangerous attacks. ■ The New Zealand forwards were weak on attack and Outfield and Monteith were the only men to break Newcastle’s defence.

Through his splendid understanding Clark, the New Zealand full-back, was the outstanding man on the field.

At half-time New Zealand led 2 to nil. Newcastle were dangerous after the interval, and Smellie, the New Zea land goalkeeper, repelled six shots, kicking with rare judgment. Newcastle scored twice in an exciting finish. For New Zealand goals were scored by Duffield (2) and Monteith (1), Reel and Gunn scored for Newcastle. -
