N.Z. V. SCOTLAND.

GALLICHAN BOWLS WELL. SCOTLAND 237; NEW ZEALAND 4 FOR 145 (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) Received Sunday, 7.30 p.m. GLASGOW, July 17. The wicket was soft and the weather fine for the match New Zealand versus Scotland. The attendance was nearly 5000. After Hadlee had been tried without success as the opening bowler the attack was borne by Dunning, Vivian and Gallichan. A feature of the day was the success of the slow left-handers. Gallichan achieved his best performance since the first match against Surrey. Three catches were taken from him in the slips. Good catching also assisted Vivian. Safe acceptances were made at long-on and mid-ou by Carson and Gallichan, The Edinburgh and Glasgow papers unanimously call the game a Test. It certainly had that atmosphere. Some of the time the scoring yvas very slow, Mitchell-Innes being a dashing exception. Ho gave a brilliant exhibition of strong front of the wicket play' marked by beautiful drives on both sides of the wicket. He scored a six, two fours and a two in one over off Vivian, and four fours in one over off Dunning, another six off Dunning and a third off Gallichan, Heggie and Tod were slow but played a useful innings.

New Zealand’s batting was distinguished by the dashing vigour of Vivian, the lefthander, who was in top form, racing past the half-century in just over naif an hour. He had then hit eight fours and a six. Altogether there- were ten fours and two sixes in his 75 out of the first 98 runs scored. Wallace was more restrained than usual but confident and correct. He compiled a sound 50 in an hour and aquarter, including six fours. ■Scotland’s high-class slow bowlers, the lefthander Melville and the righthander Peebles, probably bowled as well as any pair met in England. The New Zealand team was: Page, Vivian, Moloney, Wallace, Kerr, Hadlee, Donnelly, Gailichan, Lowry, Dunning, Carson. Scores: —
