SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.

The Coronation celebrations in May, and the occurrence of the New Educational Conference in July, have meant some considerable rearrangement of the school holidays this year. In accordance with the Education Department’s announcement, all schools in the Wellington Education Board’s district are to be closed for one week in July, from Monday, July 19th, to Friday, July 23rd, both dates inclusive, to allow teachers to attend the conference. This has necessitated the curtailing of the May holidays- by one week, and schools, which Avill be closed from Thursday, May 13th, will resume on Monday, May 2-lth, when teh second term will be commenced. Coronation Day, Wednesday, May 12th, will be the last day of the first term. All children will be assembled as usual ou that morning, when each school will be asked to conduct a suitable ceremony, after which the pupils may be dismissed for the holidays. It is anticipated that school robs will be marked for the morning of Coronation Day, but the afternoon will be regarded, as a holiday. The Government has decided that jHng ’s Birthday w’ill be obsetAed on June 9th. All schools will accordingly be closed that day.

NO INTENTION TO CUT OUT MAY VACATION WELLINGTON, Last NightThe discloeation of the school routine caused by the infantile paralysis epidemic, and the fact that the Coronation celebrations in May and the new education fellowship conference in July will break further into the school year, have been causing- concern to many parents in Wellington. The Education Department recently announced that the May school holidays would be reduced by one week and a special vacation would be given in July for a week of the new education fellowship conference. The schools are to resume on May 24, instead of May 31, as originally intended, and are to close again for that week in July in which the conference falls in each district, or in the most convenient adjacent district. The attitude of the department was explained to-day by the Director of Education (Mr. N. T. Lam bourne), who said there was no intention to cut out the May vacation.
