EARTH RAMMER EXPLODES.

OLD WHALE BOMB SHAFT.

(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) NORFOLK ISLAND, Aug. 23.

A broken lance bomb shaft used in whaling many years ago, and unsuspectedly containing a live cartridge, was the cause of an accident a few days ago. For a long time Mr G Hickey, a settler from Victoria, had used the shaft as a rammer. The other day he was ramming the earth round a post when the cartridge exploded. The charge and fragments lacerated one of Mr Hickey’s legs severely, and inflicted other injuries. He was rushed to the hospital, where he remained unconscious for several hours. Although he is suffering greatly from shock, his condition is now improving.
