FIVE BRITISH WHALERS FOR ANTARCTIC.

1500 SEAMEN WANTED. THE NORWEGIAN BOYCOTT. (By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 2. Following the Government's whaling decision, five ships are to depart for the Antarctic within a few days. British firms own eight factory ships and about 50 or GO whale-capturing boats. Applications are pouring in from British seamen, who will be trained by a few retained Norwegians.

The Daily Mail says that 1500 men are required. The master of the expedition will receive £2OOO a year, a gunner £ISOO to £IBOO and seaman about £3 a week.

An Oslo message states that the Government, after a conference, decided to suggest to the sailors’ organisation the abandonment of the boycott against the British whaling ships, and the organisation agreed. It is hoped that a new basis will be found for reopening negotiations with the British companies.

No Removal of Boycott

(British Official Wireless). RUGBY, Sept. 2

Before Ihe British Government tool; the step announced last niglu of fi K . withdrawal of the regulation imposing a close season on British whaling shij.s. it waited to receive proposals fffir settlement of tin; whaling dispute which the Norwegian Charge d ’Affaires in London presented yesterday. As these proposals did not contain either any mention of removal of the boycott imposed by the Norwegian seamen's unions or of any suggestions which might have formed a basis of an immediate settlement, the Government had no option but to proceed with the issue of the new regulations. It is understood nevertheless that the new Norwegian proposals are receivingcareful consideration in London. Though not immediately acceptable, they are thought to contain suggestions worthy of study.
