HUEY LONG DEAD.
BULLET WOUND PROVES FATAL.
{By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright) Received Tuesday, Midnight BATON ROUGE, Sept. 10. Senator Huey Long died at 2 a.m. (Eastern Standard time) as the result of a bullet wound in the abdomen inflicted by Dr. Carl A. Weiss, a member of the anti-Long political faction. THREE BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS FAIL. TROUBLE EXPECTED IN LOUISIANA ; Received Tuesday, 10.15 p.m. NEW YORK, Sept. 10. Twenty-four hours after the shooting the physicians abandoned hope of Senator Huey Long’s recovery. The family left the hospital at 10.20 p.m,, at which time the Senator was in a coma. The third blood transfusion ■was given at 11 p.m., but apparently •without beneficial results.
President Roosevelt, decrying the attempt on Mr Long’s life, said: “The spirit of violence is un-American and has no place in the consideration of public affairs, least of all at a time when a calm, dispassionate approach to the difficult problems of the day is so essential.”
The attempt on Mr Long’s life hastened the organisation of a movement to run him for the Presidency, The “Share Our Wealth Society” of St. Louis sent the stricken leader a spray of flowers with the message, "God bless you,” and announced that it would within the next few days open offices and begin a "Long for President” campaign. Within Louisiana itself the possible removal' of Senator Long seems to have brought about conditions threatening civil strife*. Not only are; National Guardsmen patrolling Baton Eouge, but the men with sawn-off shotguns are everywhere about the Government buildings. Signilicantly enough the Legislature to-day passed the Bill sponsored by Senator Long that will result in the removal from office of Juelgc Pavy, father-in-law of Dr, Carl Weiss, who shot Ruey Long. Judge Pavy, father-in-law of Dr, Weiss, who did the shooting, said today;—
”1 am certain that his intensive study of the Louisiana political situation convin" - I him that the form of Government of the State under Senator Long’s dm tutorship, was so terrible and such a miscarriage of justice that his breedings finally unbalanced his mind.”
