MAYOR’S SOCIAL SERVICE FUND.
(To the Editor). Sir,—l should like to state that from time to time many useful and generous gifts have been received from residents aware of local, needs and of the work of the Social Service Committee which meets fortnightly on Friday afternoon.' Realising, however, that someresidents might be unaware of the need that exists in our midst and around us, an appeal for assistance particularly for clothing and bedding was recently made through, the ‘ * Chronicle. ” I am pleased" to say -the response has been very encouraging, and I desire most heartily to thank all those who have helped and those who intend to assist in this direction. So far as relief workers are concerned, many; of them have for four years or thereabouts earned only small wages, and stocks of clothing and bedding must be very low indeed. Assistance also is required for aged and infirm fblk to which a little help is very comforting and the committee deals with these cases according to the means at its disposal.
