Kon-Ichi Abe, a member of the .Japanese trade mission to Hew Zealand, in an interview on Thursday, expressed the opinion that world economy was moving from the Atlantic to the Pacific, which would become the centre of world trade and civilisation. In this connection Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and other nations with borders on the Pacific had a great opportunity to take part in the development of a great Pacifis era.

A ease of unusual interest was heard at the Levin Courthouse before Mr J. 11. Salmon, IS.M., yesterday, when a claim was brought for rent due under a lease. It appears that the lessee had obtained an order for relief under the Mortgagors' Relief Act early in 1934 and subsequently had applied to the Court for a review of his case. The lessor sued for rent due early in 1935 and the lessee claimed that judgment could not be entered while the review' wms pending. Counsel for the lessor claimed that the lessee was bound to pay the rent provided for under this order for relief until the order was varied by the Court. After hearing a legal argument, the Magistrate adjourned the summons, sine die, to be brought on on fourteen days’ notice.

On Monday evening next, a meeting of the Levin Chamber of Commerce (Incorporated) will take place in the Regent Room, commencing at 8 p.m.

A meeting of the Levin branch of the Poultry Producers* Federation is to be held to discuss important matters concerning the forthcoming poultry Conference. Members are expected to assemble at the .Regent Theatre upstairs not later than 7.30 p.m. next Monday evening.

The Levin Volunteer Fire Brigade’s plain and fancy dress dance, which takes place in the Druids’ Hall on Wednesday week, June '5 th, promises to the an outstanding event in this dancing season, and dancers aic advised to keep this date clear.

A Levin resident, lying awake ;n bed in the early hours of this morning, was considerably surprised to hear his back door opened. On making an inspection he disturbed the intruder, who made a hurried departure, but a. thorough search of of the vicinity failed to re.veal any trace of his whereabouts. As far as it is known nothing was taken.

The annual meeting of the Levin Terminating Building Society was held last evening, when there was a small attendance of shareholders. Messrs H. Blackburn and AV), Whitaker were elected to the Board of Directors, and Mr J. L. Arcus (Wellington) was reelected auditor for the ensuing year. An appropriation of £3OO was ballotted for, which was drawn by Messrs AV. Whitaker (Levin) and J. E. Noble (Otald), entitling them to £l5O each tree of interest.

#The preacher in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church to-morrow will be the Aloderator of the (General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, the Right Rev. Principal John Dickie, D.D. In the evening his subject will be “The Authority of the Bible,’’ being the first of a series of popular lectures on Theology. The remaining lectures in the series will be delivered as advertised on Alonday, ( Tuoaday and AVednesday evenings. All are cordially invited to hear these lectures, which give a unique opportunity of hearing an authoritative and interesting treatment of these vital subjects.

Criticism of the lack of co-operation among dairy farmers was expressed at the annual meeting of the Dairy Farmers’ Union by Air AV. H. Gimblctt. He expressed the opinion that those engaged in the industry could themselves

right the problems with regard to pork and bacon quotas if they worked together . There would lie no real need for an outside Commission to govern the industry if the farmers themselves would pull together. As matters stood now, he prophesied that in a few years the control of the, industry would go out of their hands altogether and he in those of trusts which would tell the industry what was wanted and what was not.
