Nicholson, pointed out that as in the previous year only the number of nominations required to fill the vacant offices had come forward, hence the need for a ballot had boon once more avoided. The following were then duly appointed as office-bearers for the ensuing year:— Patrons: W. IT. Field, Esq., and J. Linklater, Esq., M.’sP. 'President: Air W, Ryder. Vice-presidents: Alessrs J. Ryder, W. G. Vickers, T. Bevan, AV. Higgins, J. AV. Procter, and W. Bull. Hon. Surgeons: Drs. L. J. Hunter and S. J. Thompson. Auditor: Air D. G. Hamilton. Stewards; Messrs W. Capper, AV. Staunard, L. G. McDonald, S. B. Alexted, AI. AViniata, W. Hannan, F.- Davis, S. Sievers, S. L. Jackson, E. AI. Ryder, T. Boddy, and R. V. Brown. LIFE MEMBERSHIP. Air J. W. Pro'cter expressed regret that the health of the late President, Air AV. iG. Vickers, was at present not all that might be desired. He considered that it would be a fitting act on the part of the meeting to elect him a life-member to the club. A motion to this effect was seconded by Air T. Boddy and carried unanimously. Air AV. Bull considered that a further step should be taken in placing on record the services rendered to the club by Air Vickers, who’ had filled the office of president for some years. The amount of work entailed by the position was not always fully realized by members. The Chairman, in endorsing the previous speakers’ remarks, added that Air Vickers had been an excellent member of the Club in every way, and. it was to be regretted that his health prevented his attendance at the meeting. It was decided that a letter of appreciation be sent to Air Vickers. STATE OF COURSE. . Air Procter called the attention o'f the meeting to a rumour which, he stated, was being circulated to the effect that the course was at present in very bad order and not in a fit state for the working of horses. To this rumour the speaker, as a member of the Course Committee, wished to give an emphatic denial, the course having, he maintained, never been in a better condition that at the moment. These remarks were borne out 'by the Chairman, who stated that the track, having been rolled following the rains, presented an exceptionally level surface. He drew before the attention of the course commitee, however, that j the few horses training on the grounds
should .bo restricted more to the inside track and the “plough,” as rather free use was being made of the course itself, which should be reserved for fast gallops only. CONTROL OF GROUNDS. The financial statement upon the year’s activities of the joint committee of the Horowhenua A. and P. Association and the Racing Club for the control of the grounds, was submitted by the secretary. The revenue account showed that receipts had totalled £337 14s, and expenditure £377 14s 2d, there thus being, a deficit of £2O Os 2d. Commenting upon these figures, Mr R. Y. Brown, as a member of the committee, informed the meeting that considerable expense had been incurred in connection with the up'keep of the training stables and buildings, which would not be again recurring for some years. SANID ROLL. Mr R. V. Brown pointed out that a. number of complaints had been received that the covered “sand roll” fairly recently provided for horses had pri ' cd too small for requirements. The necessary enlargements should, he thought, be carried out before the forthcoming meeting of the Otaki Maori Racing Club. Other members spoke in the same strain, there being some discussion as to the extent of enlargement" advisable. The matter was finally left in. the hands of Mr J. W. Procter to be attended to. - There being no further business (brought forward the meeting Concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair.
