The- No. 1 grass was open for fast work and although the times were particularly slow, a number of those who did gallop recorded quite attractive performances. Raparahara and Royal Record finished in front of Alby at the end of Jive furlongs, and they moved as if they were quite at home in the going. Jack Sullivan’s charges, Confiscation. Hunting Bag and La Poupee, were rcstrief'd to pace work, also Bumble, the half-brother to Admiral Drake, and Okanagan, a son of Gascony, from F. W. Davis’ stable. Yodel, the full-sister to Chock Say, and Pomposity, from D. Kemp’s stable, were given light tasks. Among the visitors out on the track were Tahoma, Lord Hereford and Joystick. The course proper was very heavy after Wednesday night’s downpour, but except for one or two very light showers there was little rain yesterday, and by evening the going had improved considerably.. If there is no further rain the course should be in quite good order for to-morrow. Riding Engagements for Dannevirke The following riding engagements have been announced for to-morrow:— A, McDonald; Gold Cure. Mr G. H. James: Gometra. L. 11. Jones: Tupurangi, Timorous (second day). R. Reed: Rompalong, Sunny Sky, Boudoir. J. Mclnally: Full Throttle, Evasion, Note Issue, Waitohu. S. Anderson, who was ridibg at Te Rapa, will be back for the second day of the Dannevirke meeting, and has been engaged for Cyclopean. AT AWAPUNI GOING WAS VERY HEAVY Despite the fall of a couple of inches of rain overnight the course proper was available - for fast work at Awapuni yesterday morning. The going, however, was very heavy. Rompalong and Hilton Gorse were associated over half a mile, the former being more at home in the going. The time was 50 2-5. They are both engaded at the Dannevirke’ meeting, which opens to-morrow. Taumau had Te Rangitumau as a companion over seven turlongs, the last six of which took 1.24 1-5. They both moved attractively. Sir Romeo and Petrarch were galloped five and the former, with a big advantage in weight, was clear at the finish. Esteem, with a lightweight in the saddle, had no trouble in accounting for Round Score and Waitohu over a mile run in 1.501. Full Throttle was a length clear of Boudoir and Gold Cure at the end of seven furlongs cut out in 1.40 4-5.
