A DOUBTFUL BENEFIT.

(To the Editor). Sir, —Would you he so kind as to give me a little space in your valuable paper. After ''reading your paper of the 21st inst, re the Borough Council meeting, the first since the election of new members, I notice that a member of the new Council brings down a measure to come forward at their next meeting: to have all staff salaries restored, and cuts lifted. It sounds well, but do you not think that it is a bit previous, under the present conditions that exist in our midst. If the Council has sufficient funds to grant this rise, why ask the people of Levin to contribute to the necessity for starving and unclothed families'? Why not use this surplus money for the above mentioned? There are plenty of men unemployed who wo'uld be glad of two or three days a week extra that would put them on a living basis, instead of a bare existence. The mover of this motion seems to be working ,on the wrong ticket. I understand he represents Labour, but Labour principals are: Start at the bottom and gradually work up; any man receiving from "£2OO upwards at the present time is adequately paid. Why fatten the fat? Let us hope before next meeting the mover will have his motion rescinded and amended. Apparcntsly it looks to me that he is just merely the scapegoat to the Committee and not the representative who was .put into office bv the people.—. Faithfully yours, DEMOCRAT.
