CROSSING SMASH RESULTS IN SERIOUS INJURIES.

MOTOR-CAR WRECKED

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHANGAREI, Nov. 2D.

Two young women, Miss Phyllis Perkins, of Whangarei, and Miss Gwenneth Dahl, of Kaeo, when motoring from Kaeo this afternoon, were struck by a train of fifteen coal trucks at a level-crossing near Hikurangi. Both were seriously injured and were taken to hospital. Miss Dahl suffered a fractured thigh, fracture of skull, and etxensivc abrasions. Her condition is very grave. Miss Perkins, an employee of the Whangarei Canvas Company, suffered a compound fracture of the right forearm, injuries to face, general abrasions, and shock. Her condition is serious.

The car was struck in the centre of the driver's seat by the engine and was carried on the cow-catcher of the engine for about 100 feet, and when the train was stopped it roned down a fifteen-foot railway embankment. Miss Dahl was thrown clear, but Miss Perkins was found under the car, which was completely wrecked. I

Constable W. Butler and Dr. Armstrong, of Hikurangi, were soon on the spot, and after attention the injured persons were conveyed by a St. John ambulance to Whangarei Hospital. Miss Perkins, who is 24 years of age, came to New Zealand from-. South India about four years ago, and took up her residence in Whangarei about last July, Miss Dahl, aged 16, is the daughter •f Mr L. Gvveneth Pearl Dahl, aged 16, died in hospital last night as a result of injuries received when a ear she was riding in ■was struck by a train at a level 'crossing mear Hikurangi on Thursday. The other victim, Phyllis Perkins, is making satisfactory progress.
