IMPORTANT MATCHES AT OHAXJ
Two Wellington Maori women’s representative hockey teams travelled to Ohau on Saturday to play the annual fixtures with Ohau and Manakau respectively. Both games Avere witnessed by a large crowd. The senior A team forced Ohau to a lucky draw, while the B team was defeated _ by Manakau. The senior A teams were:
’Oliau: Goal, Miss I. Winiata; backs, Misses L. .Campbell, S. Tawihi; halves, Misses W. Wehipeihana, O. Wehipeihana, M. Wehipeihana; forwards, Misses V. Lewis, A. Wehipeihana, R. Paipa, Seymour, R. Heremia. Wellington: Goal, Mrs H. Walker (captain); backs, Mrs IST. Piwari, Miss W. Parata; halves, Misses R. Walker, E. Martin, H. Te Hiko; forwards, Misses D. Katene, B. Parata, ,L. Arthur, E. Te Hike, E Wi Neera. Chau pressed from the star, fine goal-keeping by Mrs Walker and a stout defence by Mrs Piwari and Miss W. Parata holding up a dangerous move. A splendid drive by Miss E. Martin gave Wellington a grand chance, but the cross pass went astray. East, even play followed, Miss L. Campbell giving a splendid full-back display for Ohau, while Miss Martin showed to advantage for Wellington. A long pass from Miss Campbell was smartly gathered in by Miss V. Lewis, who in-passed to Miss E. Paipa. The last-named drew the defence and clevefly returned the ball to Miss Lewis, who drove in a low shot, Mrs Piwari obstructing the goalkeeper’s view for Ohau to be one up at the interval. OHAU PRESSES HARD. The second spell was practically a repetition of the first; and if anything favoured Ohau, who played much better as a team than in the first spell. Wellington equalised when Miss E. Te Hiko goaled. Ohau pressed for a win and but for outstanding work by Mrs Walker, Misses Martin and W. Parata would have achieved theiij object. The game concluded in a draw, one goal each. FAST, OPEN 'GAME. Manakau and Wellington B provided a fast, open game, and the result in favour of Manakau by the barest of margins about represented the merits of the teams. Manakau’s goal was scored in the first spell, Miss M. Cook, inside left, netting with a well-judged shot. The second spell favoured Manakau, outstanding full-back work by Mrs S. Ballard and Miss L. Gunson preventing the home forwards from scoring. The match ended in a win for Manakau by one go alto nil. UPPER HUTT BEAT WENEREI. In a special challenge match between Upper Hutt and Wenerei senior B teams, Upper Hutt gained a runaway win by 7 goals to nil Misses K. SLrickland and J. Avery (three each) and Marsden scored Upper Hutt’s goals; TE HORO MARRIED v. SINGLE. A match between the above will be played at Otaki on Wednesday at 1.30 p.m. Married: Fielding, Best, Cottle, Wallace, Faith, iCottle, Cobb, Taylor, McDonald, Edwards, Rutter. iSingle: Fielding (3), Kendrick (2), Baines (2), Fleet, Davidson, Morgan, Sinkinson. A dinner will follow at 6.30 at the Railway Hotel.
