Hungarian’s Queer Revenge On Insurance Company

DELIBERATELY GETS HIMSELF HANGED. MURDERS HIS BEST FRIEND Received Friday, 10.5 p.m. LONDON, Dee. 22. The Daily Express’ Vienna correspondent vouches for an extraordinary story concerning Michael Detenyi, of Budapest, who got himself hanged in order to get even with an insurance company which insured his life for £SOOO for death from “natural causes’’ and £IO,OOO for “death from other than natural causes.’’

Wanting £2500 urgently, Detenyi offered to renounce all further claims, otherwise he would commit suicide. The company, thinking he was bluffing, refused to pay.

A few days later Detenyi killed his best friend and was tried for murder and hanged. His heirs, claiming that hanging was not a natural death, successfully sued the insurance company for £10,000.. The climax came when it was found that the murdered man was similarly insured for £20,000 if “death was due to other than natural causes.’’

The Judge agreed that murder was not natural, so the heirs of the murdered man will receive £20,000, completing Detenyi’s promise to inflict an “unpleasant and expensive surprise upon the company.”
