SLIPPED 300 FEET.
FIVE EGMONT TRAMPERS. ALL MORE OR LESS INJURED. i BUMPED OVER HARD SNOW AND ROCKS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. An alpine accident that might easily have had more serious consequences, occurred on the North Egmont summit track yesterday afternoon. Five members of a party of seventeen, which was returning from the summit, slipped on the crusted snow at about the 7000 ft. level. The climbers fell about 300 feet down the hard snow slope, bumping over rocks on the way and suffering scalp wounds and abrasions. They were pulled up by soft snow. Other climbers were handy and gave first aid, and the party reached the North Egmont hostel between six and seven o'clock. The five climbers concerned, who were all roped together, j were: Miss Nancy Gannaway. of Auckland; cuts above the right eye, ami abrasions. Rod Symc, of Hawera; cuts and abrasions. Morton Jones, of New Plymouth; injury to the right arm. Desmond Ryan, of Hawera; scalp wounds and general abrasions. Kenneth Joblin, of inglewood; cuts cm the right hand, and abrasions. Dr. D. E. Blown, who was at the North Egmont hostel when word was received, and who attended the injured persons on the trade and later examined their wounds, sent Miss Gannaway and Messrs Jones and Ryan to hospital. Miss Gannaway will require about a week's treatment, and her head will be X-rayed. Mr Jones's arm will be X-rayed. I!he .accident was caused by Mr Synie, who was the anchor man of the rope, slipping. The party had nailed boots and an ice-axe each, also rucksacks complete with warm clothing, food and bandages—in fact full alpine equipment.
