TARIFF PROBLEM.

TOWN AND COUNTRY CONFLICT. MANUFACTURERS URGE GOVERNMENT TO BE CAUTIOUS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. The following telegram was sent today to the Rt. lion. J. G. Coates by Mr F. Campbell, President of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation: — ‘‘On behalf of the manufacturers of New Zealand, 1 urge the Government not to be stampeded by the dairy industry, which is evidently bringing great pressure to bear on the Government to commit itself to a reduction of tariff without waiting for the findings of the Royal Commission, which is now, in accordance with the Ottawa Agreement, inquiring into the whole question of industries and tariff. In view of the fact that our existing tariff is low and moderate —about onethird that of Australia —we trust that the Government will give full consideration to this fact before taking action.”
