“QUITE UNCALLED FOR.”

COMPLAINT ABOUT WAIMEHA ROAD.

11l advising tue Horowhenua County Council on Saturday that as at June Bth, no improvement was noticeable in the maintenance of the WalkacaeWaimeha Highway, the District Engineer wrote that the Highway Board was desirious of an immediate betterment in the maintenance standard; and he asked to be advised, for the information of the Board, what steps the Council proposed to take. It was not anticipated that any reduction would be made by the Board in the Council’s estimate for this year’s maintenance of the above highway.

The chairman remarked that whoever was responsible for making the complaint to the Highways Board was not giving any consideration to the County Engineer—not giving him the consideration that ho deserved. The whole of the corrugations had boon removed from the road. He (the chairman) had gone over it a few weeks ago, and it was then in quite good order.

“There is 'a nigger in the •woodpile,’ ’’ the chairman added. “I don’t know whether we can waylay him or not. That communication is quite uncalled for. I went over the road previously to it being done up, and I have been over it Since. Anybody who has inspected the road as I have, knows that this is wrong.’’ Cr. Jensen: Even before that road was fixed up it was not too bad. I have been over a lot of worse roads than that, even on the main highways. The big grader was sent down and the road graded in. A lorry has been carting a light coat of gravel over the past three weeks. It is certainly a narrow road, and there are corners there that want attention.

The chairman suggested that the District Engineer or his representative be invited to meet the County Engineer or the chairman and go over the road. This course was agreed to.
