YESTERDAY’S RESULTS. 1* ■ -- - MEN. >O/' „ ■ Rovers beat Te Horo B 5 —2. Levin defaulted to Te ..Horo A. Otaki beat Paraparaumu, s—o. LADIES. Levin beat Waikanae 2—o. Otaki beat Manakau, 3—o. Ohau beat Paraparaumu, 3—l. LADIES’ MATCH. LEVINDEFEAT WAIKANAE. LOCAL TEAM’S IMPROVED HITTING. Waikanae journeyed to Levin yesterday and met the Levin gix-ls on the Park Domain, which was in a slippery state and made foothold rather uncertain. After the game the visitors were entertained to afternoon tea by the Levin girls. Frpm the commencement Levin were not long before opening their scoring through the agency of B. Milroy. Following up: this score K. McMinn quickly added another and Levin led at half-time by 2 goals to nil. .Throughout this spell Levin held the territorial advantage.

Waikanae attacked from the interval- but -Levin cleared and D. Parsons missed from a centre by A. Crighton. Levin swept upheld and a shot was saved by the visiting goalie. A corner to Levin followed but E, Palmer missed with her attempt at goal; Waikanae pressed and had play in Levin’s circle but the ball missed the net. Back went Levin to the opposite end where •D. Parsons again missed. Waikanae then looked like scoring but the Levin goalie saved and B. hlilroy took the ball up the wing but her centre went astray when D. Parsons missed from a difficult angle. Waikanae then forced Levin to give a corner from which they cleared. Back went Waikanae and a hard, shot was splendidly saved by Levin’s goalie who gave a corner. Waikanae failed to score from this and Levin had play in the visitors’ territory when time sounded. Mr Dunford capably held the whistle.

Levin girls put up a much improved showing, supporting one another better . There was one fault and that was positional play' in which the forwards were at times not in their positions when wanted. Still, compared with their previous match it cannot be denied that the display given yesterday by the local girls was definitely better than their preceding one. •With the absence of the mainstay of the team, V. Henderson, who was unable to play owing to an injury received while playing Badminton, and fielding only 10 players, the players set out with a will to make up for. this defier ncy and they did their job .well.

What a contrast in hitting! Last week the writer pointed out the weakness in this respect exhibited by the local team, hut their display in this department yesterday was a totally different one. They certainly i made no hones about it, ‘ the ball being whacked good and hard, in, fact too hard at times when near the visitors’ ' circle. Every player was a trier and it was the best display witnessed by the writer tins season. Now that they have shown that they can hit, there will be no reason why there should be any lapse in this respect in future. Players were inclined to obstruct on various occasions and consequently were penalised. Never turn round on an opponent and thus block her from hitting the ball. Tackling showed an improvement but there is still room yet for players to become better in this department. There were times when different ones, after being beatten for the ball, would let their opponents have plenty of time to get their hit in. For Waikanae Miss Parata at fullback was the most outstanding player on the field, her defence being very sure and her stickwork carried plenty of punch behind it. Miss Oliver also showed up prominently and that this player can run was well demonstrated. She often carried too much pace for the opposition. The forwards combined well but could not finish off any advantage gained. B, Hearle, Levin's goalie, did not ■have much to do but on two occasions saved splendidly. V. Palmer and J. Trotter, .the full-backs, were safe, tho latter being very decisive in her •clearing shots, giving- her best display to date. The halves —M. Par rant, E. Palmer and G. Butt —all hit well, especially B. Palmer. G. Butt was inclined to speculate at times. The forwards —B. Milroy, E. McMinn, D. Parsons and A. Crighton, found the

defence very determined in trying tokeep them out of the circle. B. Milroy put in some very good runs down the line with the ball, but wants to centre quicker. Never wait, get that ball into the circle after you have carried it upheld. The: same applies to the other wing. K. McMinn was inclined to get offside and several chances were lost. Did better in the latter part of the game. D. Parsons (centre) at times hampered the wing by trying to help them, but should stay more in the centre and be ready to receive the ball from the wingers. A. Crighton did not see so much of the ball as did the other wing but wants to remember to get the ball into the centre quickly; never wait to get the ball into position before hitting. Considering that there were only four forwards these players acquitted themselves very well. In the ladies’ match at Paraparaumu, the goals for Ohau were scored by Miss R. Campbell (2) and Miss R. Piper. Ihe southern team’s goal was scored by Miss Howell.
