"BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN."
LEVIN W.E.A. LECTURE. A very interesting lecture on art, entitled *'"Beautiful '' wap read by Mrs Plumridge at the Levin W.E.A. meeting held in the Regent Theatre ante-room last evening, and over which Mr H. Harvey presided. In connection with the lecture, 32 plates were shown, exhibiting great painters' ideas of children in art. This lecture is to be continued later. • Last week Dr. I. L. G-. Sutherland's lecture on '"lntellect (and Reason" was read by Mrs Townsend. The chair was occupied by Miss Bruce, and 20 members were present. The lecture was freely discussed, the chief point being "Does modern education in State schools and universities teach people to think for themselves?" The 'opinion of the meeting was that it does -»ot. Other points freely disci-nnl /'or'* the four headings of thinking - namely, reverie, routine, rationalisation and problem-solving. Attention was "drawn to the way words can be changed in an emotional way and not a rational one, as, for instance, such words as "revolutionary," "panacea," "atrocity," '"extremism," "reactionary," and "bureaucracy" To these the meeting added the word "Communism."
The opinions of two well-known economists were given as to a world place for settling our present day problems. While one agreed that this would overcome our difficulties, the other did not approve, owing to the easy way that people can be swayed with habits of thought. Next week the discussion class will take Mr Bernard Shaw's play "Candid©," and a lecture, "Mental Hygiene of the Child," by Professor W. H. Goulds
