Indian Buffalo a Good Milk Producer
SUGGESTED INTRODUCTION INTO DOMINION WELLINGTON, Last Night. “India possesses an animal which you could well do with in New Zealand —the buffalo,” said Mr T. D. Ayo, headmaster of St. George’s School, Agra, India, to-day. ‘ ‘The milk of this animal contains at least 6.5 per ennt. of butter-fat, whereas Jerseys in New Zealand seldom go above 5 per cent. The best buffaloes in India have touched 7.5 per cent.,, and the average yield of the Indian buffalo that has been fairly well cared for is altout 301 b of milk a day at the start.” Mr Ayo is on six months’ leave before retiring, and intends to settle down in New Zealand. He observed that the quarantine restrictions in New Zealand would make it difficult to import animals from India owing to the existence of foot and mouth disease in that country.
