BASE HOSPITAL FOR HAWKE’S BAY.
SITE CHOSEN AT NAPIER. FIFTY-BED HOSPITAL FOR HASTINGS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIER, Thusday. The site of the destroyed Public Hospital on Napier Hills was unanimously selected by the Hospital Board yesterday as the site for the new base hospital for the district. Plans have been prepared by the Department for an institution to cost £IIO,OOO, with accommodation for 145 patients. An immediate start is to be made with the construction. A deputation comprising the Board Chairman and three Hastings members will go to Wellington to urge on the Minister the necessity of providing fifty beds for general cases at Hastings. Hastings has been demanding that the district base hospital be located there on the ground that the Napier Hills were unsafe and would cost too much to prepare as a site. Their case was strengthened by the fact that a legacy of £35,000 has been recently left for hospital purposes in Hastings. A great deal of feeling has been shown between the two towns over the subject.
