CONTINENTAL SOCIALISM.

WHAT DOES-POPE CONDEMN? (Sun Special). LONDON, Sunday. “Only a summary of the Pope’s encyclical on social and economic problems has yet been published, and there is a possibility that hasty translation has produced ambiguities. The words ‘a good Catholic cannot be a true Socialist > may refer to Communism, not to Socialism,” says the Jesuit Father Day. “If so, most Englishmen will agree with the Pope. There are plenty of good Catholics among British Socialists. Until the encyclical is full translated it is impossible to say what section of Socialism the Pope condemns.” Mr J. Sexton, Labour M.P., who is a Roman Catholic, says: “The Pope apparently refers to the extreme, irreligious type of Continental Socialism. The English type is very different, and has been modified into the nationalisation of essential commodities. I know of nothing preventing a Catholic from becoming a Socialist of the British type.”
