OTAKI NEWS.

Road improvement is being effected in Kirk Street, work that will be appreciated by all using that thoroughfare. A storm of great severity passed over Otaki on Monday night. Thunder and vivid flashes of lightning accompanied a heavy downpour of rain. Hail also fell. There was a fair attendance at the Otaki Lodge of Druids’ quarterly meeting last night. One new member was initiated. The. following officers were elected: A.D., Bro. Swensson; V.A.D., Bro. Garrity; secretary, Bro.- Collins, P.A.; treasurer, Bro. Saveli; 1.G., Sis. A. O’Grady; 0.G., Sis, E. O’Grady; A.D.B.’s, Bros. E. Taylor and C. Williams, P.A.; V.A.D.8., Bro. W. Bills, P.A.; minute secretary, Bro. Saveli; auditor, Bro. R. Bills, P.A. After the Otaki Borough Council had discussed flood damage on Monday it was pointed out by Cr. Smith that for the next three months there would be a lot of work to contend with by the Clerk, and he suggested that a boy be employed in the office during that time, the Council to pay the wages. Cr. Richards pointed out that at last meeting they had come to a decision and agreed that if a change was to be made the matter of wages was to be reviewed at the next Council meeting. Cr. Smith then gave notice of motion that the matter be reviewed at the next Council meeting. In the meantime the services of the assistant will be retained. The first euchre and dance to be held at the Parish Hall for some considerable time took place on Monday night when an enjoyable time was spent by all who attended. The three euchre tables were well patronised and speaks well for the popularity of this card game, while the floor space was occupied by the dancers. At a suitable interval Father Riordan, before presenting the euchre prizes, accorded thanks to all for attending, considering the inclement, state of the weather, and trusted that their next euchre tind dance would be as well supported. Prizes were then handed to the following successful contestants:—First lady and gent, Mrs. G. Gray, and Mr. Tero Turu; second lady, Mrs. Wilson, while Mrs. O’Sullivan won the second gent’s prize. Dancing was then continued to music supplied by Cook’s orchestra, while an extra was played by Miss W. Tahiwi. Supper was also partaken of and much appreciated.
