“COUNTRY WILL BLAME MR COATES.”
OPINION OF EX-REFORM MEMBER. On the question of fusion, Mr. G. V. Pearce, former Reform M.P, for Patca, made the following remarks in the course of his address at the farmers’ meeting held at Maxwell (reports the Stratford Evening Post): — “'Under the present conditions, the country will blame Mr. Coates so much that he will go down at the election. I’m afraid he has taken his lead from his members in the House. I think if they took the Reform vote outside the House there would be a large majority in favour of fusion, and I think the Reform party would make a great mistake not to come to some terms before the election.” Continuing, Mr, Pearce said: “Mr. Forbes is doing his best for the countxy, and we should bring it strongly before the Reform party that they should come to some arrangement before the election.” Mr. Pearce added that if fusion did not take place the Socialist party would be on top at" the next election. He had only met one Reform supporter in Hawke’s Bay who was in favour of a three-party contest.”
