COUNTRY’S SAFETY LIES IN PARTY GOVERNMENT.

DECLARES MR COATES. DEPARTURE HAS LED TO. CONFUSION AUCKLAND, May 26. The leader of the Opposition (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates) has made the following general statement on the question of fusion;— ‘ ‘ The question is whether this coun try would be better governed under the party system or under a small group of politicians. The history of other countries, particularly the British Empire, gives us quite enough evidence that where countries have departed from party principles, it has led to confusion. British and Australian politics show that amalgamation would not improve conditions. “It can be said with truth that the countries that have remained true to the principles of party government have remained safe. They may be unpopular at* times, but so long as they remain true and follow their principles closely, we find that these countries have met their emergencies better than where hotch-potch or hasty amalgamation has been effected. This applies to New Zealand, where no such unsatisfactory mistake could be made.”
