SWIMMING AND DIVING.
CLEVER DISPLAY BY MISS LILY COPPLESTONE. Yesterday afternoon the seating accommodation at the Coronation Baths was taxed to its utmost when Miss Lily Copplestone gave an exhibition of swimming and diving. With the assistance of Mr J. Casey as announcer, she demonstrated the evolution of swimming from thd original breaststroke to the present 8-beat American crawl. This improvement in style and speed may be said to have developed in seven stages: — 1. Breast strike. 2. Underarm sidestroke. 3. Overarm sidestroke. 4. Single Trudgeon. 5. Double Trudgeon. 6. Trudgeon Crawl. This stroke is still used a lot for long distance swimming. 7. American crawl. ' This series demonstrated a series of styles and strokes up to the time that the back-stroke came into use and Miss Copnlostone fUmi ornc-Aodod to give a : :ent which had boon effect'd in this stroke: (1) Lack-stroke, with hands on hips; (2) ordinary back-stroke; (3) American back-stroke—the fast racing stroke. The next stroke was one Miss Copplestone had invented herself and which she uses in all her long distance swims and which she calls the doublh i rudgeon crawl. . Then came a scries of spectacular turns or what might be termed scientific swimming and each of these items brought unstinted applause from the onlookers. This series consisted of sculling, forward somersaults, backward somersaults, looping the loop, porpoise, submarine, rolling log, swimming on hands and marching. The display finished with a demonstration of diving in which Miss Copplestone showed much agility and dexterity. With one who has developed the sport of swimming to such a high degree there is unlimited enjoyment in those evolutions in the water and Miss Copplestone seemed to derive as much pleasure from the display she gave as did those who witnessed it.
