IMPROVED DAIRYING POSITION

LEVIN PAY-OUT FOR DECEMBER BUTTER-FAT ELEVENPENCE. TWO FLUSHES OF PRODUCTION. A pay-out at the rate of lid per lb. for butter-fat supplied to the factory during December was ffecided on by the directors of the Levin Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd:, yesterday. This is 4d less than for the corresponding month of 1929, but an increase of Id on November, 1930, and the rise of 4s per cwt. on the London market last week makes the position sounder than it has been since September, for which the pay-out was Is, falling to lOd in the following month. The season, although backward for spring feed, has not been quite unfavourable to dairy farmers, and has been remarkable for two flushes. The peak ordinarily anticipated just prior to the summer was reached towards the end of November, when the output was 28* boxes, or 20 more than at the peak of the previous season. Early in December, owing to exceptionally cold weather for the time of the year, the yield receded, but with the advent of warm rains the peak was again reached, and for about a week the daily output was from 282 to 284 boxes. For the month of December the total of butter-fat received at the factory showed an increase of 10.1 per cent, over the quantity for the same month of the preceding year, thus enabling a new record for a month’s manufacture to be established. The output from the beginning of the season, June Ist, to the end of December, was 7.5 per cent, more than for the same seven months of 1929. The effect of recent rain has been to sustain the growth of green feed, and, with the market at its present improved position, the New Year may be said to have come s in with fair promise.
