LIBEEAL PROGRAMME AND

PRIZES

A grand sports meeting, in which equestrian events will figure largely, is to be held on the Levin Showgrounds on Easter Monday, April 21st, under the auspices of the Horowhonua A. and P. Association. The movement was set on foot at the beginning of last week, when a special committee was set up, which considered the possibilities and reported to a meeting of the general committee of the Association held last evening. The sports will precede by two days the annual camp of the Manawatu Mounted Rifles, and it :s hoped to have a number of the troopers present as competitors. The Regiment has a high reputation for horsemanship and general sporting talent, and its representation will add considerably to the zest of the occasion. On the Friday night following, the Association will hold a dance, and this in turn should prove a strong attraction. The meeting last evening was attended by about twenty members, and the President (Mr R. V. Brown) was in the chair. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs IT. Benton and 11. N. TToldaway.

Tlio President reported that the special committee had £one carefully into the proposal submitted to them. They had apointed as their chairman

Mr A. M. Colquhoun, who had had a good deal of experience in the management of similar sports meetings in other localities.

The programme which the sports committee had drawn, up was subnutred by Air Colquhoun. It contained the following items: —Turning competition, tilting, orange race, tho-needio, addition race, medley (walk, trot and gallop), musical chairs, shirt competition, flag competition—in the foregoing events entry 2/6, prizes £l, 10s, and 2/6; boys and girls’ flag competition, pony race, and turning com-petition-entry 1/-, prizes 10s, us and 3/6; farmers’ trot (without hobbles), maidgn jump, pony race (14.3 hands and under), six 'furlongs —entry us, pi/i s £2 ai>d £1; pony jump, wrestling on horseback, apple race—entry 2/6, prizes £1 and 10s! open jump (hunters' style)—entry 7/6, prizes £4, £2 and 10s; Indies’ chain-stepping, ladies’ nail-drivirlg, men’s cfiain-st epp’uu r — entry Is, prizes £1 and' JOs; motor tilling, motor pegging—entry 2s 6d, prizes £1 and 10s; also -children’s races. ATr Colquhoun stated that the entry fees and prize money were approximately the same as at the Mauricevilie sports held on March Ist. The President said that it was proposed that the sports be held on Easter Monday. He suggested that the 0.0. A resolution was passed, on the moton of Mr C. Bartholomew, seconded, by Mr 11. Mungavin, authorising the sports to be heid on Easter Monday. It was decided, on the motion of Mill. J. Eic hards, seconded by Mr G. H. Kingdon, that tlio charge for admission be Is 6$ for adults and. 6d for children, with no extra charge to the grandstand, and that cars be admitted free. Intimation was received that Mr J. Morgan would donate 10s; as pri"enioncy for a pig-eateliiiag event. Ths vhaiiKS of the meeting was accorded, him.

Mr Kilsby said it had been suggested to him that a dance be held after the sports; and on the motion of ivlr Colquhoun, ‘-■econded by Air A. Ryder, it was resolved that this take place on the night of the Friday following. Matters of detail were left to Fne sports committee, and Messrs A'. Archers, H. Mung.'ivin, C. Ad kin. and Ranald MacDonald were added to the personnel.
