KIRKWOOD’S OUTBURST ABOUT CHEAP GATE.

FIVE SHILLING LOOK r, NOT FOR AUSTRALIANS

COMPROMISE FOR CHARITY.

Received Monday, 7 p.m. SYDNEY, March 10,

The Killara Golf Club officials have received a bombshell in the form of an ultimatum from Kirkwood that ho will not play to a cheap gallery. He says the price of admission was orglnally ten shillings and was reduced to five shillings without consultation with him.

Kirkwood and Hagen were billed to play an exhibition match on Wednesday but the former’s truculent attitude is likely to upset the programme. He demands a guarantee of a fixed sum and complains that if people cannot afford ten shillings to sec the world’s best players after they have dropped thousands of dollars to come here, then those people should not expect such a treat.

The fact that the Killara Club is one of the elite of the city makes the exAustralian’s outburst the more amusing. The club’s object in lowering the pice was to give the greatest number of enthusiasts a chance of seeing the champions in action Kirkwood, in an interview, explained that all the matches here wore arranged on the other side of the world. .“I understand they were all on the basis of a minimum guarantee of £2OO a match and whore the gate was charged, it was to bo ten shillings. 1 do not care what they charge at Killara, as long as i get my guarantee. I cannot break faith with the Melbourne people, who guaranteed me £IOOO for five matches and when I play elsewhere, the gate charge is to be ten shillings.” It is understood that Kirkwood has agreed to pay Hagen £3500 for the tour.

As a result of Kirkwood’s attitude, the Killara Club had intended to de dare the exhibition match with Ragen off. Kirkwood had a consultation with the club officials and a compromise was reached, by his agreeing to hold the match on Wednesday for charity. The committee issued a statement that it would not allow Kirkwood, or anybody else, to put the pistol at their heads.

.11 has now been decided that a foursome will bo played, the admission charge to be five' shillings and the whole proceeds to be given to the North Shore hospital.
