FINED IN THE ABSENCE OF HIS PRINCIPAL.

£IOO PENALTY ON OAMINO-HOUSE CHARGE. (By Telegraph—Press lion). AUCKLAND, This Day. John William Hopkins, aged 3G, and Herbert Edward Longridge, aged 40, salesman, were arrested this morning in an office which was alleged to be a common gaming-house. They wore brought before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police .Court. The police stated that Hopkins was employed by a principal who was absent. Hopkins had not been before the Court previously, but the principal had a business which was an extensive one.

The Magistrate said that, as the principal had been charged .before, he would treat the case as if he was again before the Court; and he lined Hopkins £IOO and costs. Langridge, for being on the premises, was lined £2 and costs.
