The largest conference of the Empire Service League since its inauguration commenced this morning when the Grand President, Viscount Jellicoe, led a pilgrimage to the Cenotaph, where wreaths were laid by Sir Andrew Russell and other New Zealanders.
Mr Amery opened the League’s Conference and in a moving address ho eulogised the late Earl Haig. All eyes were turned to Lady Haig, who, in deep mourning, with head bowed, was seated on Viscount Jellicoe’s right. She lifted her head and said: “You thought to save the Empire. ■Your task now is to help to realise the dreams you dreamt when you risked your lives. Your task is the better distribution of the parent stock and there is no better way of helping than migration and settlement.” Viscount Jellicoe said; “I don’t believe that the men who risked their lives for the Empire are not game to migrate, or, if properly handled, that there is not a prospect of successful Empire settlement on a large scale.” Mr P. O. Roberts. Minister of Pensions, said that already two hundred millions sterling bad been expended on Dominions pensions and nine hundred millions in Britain. “I promise that in future every facility will be given to servicemen ” he said. Viscount Jellicoe was re-elected Grand President.
RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSN. ANNDAE CONFERENCE OPENS. (By Telegraph —Press xVssoeiation.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The annual conference of the New 7<ealan, : d Returned Soldiers’’. Association opened to-day in the Town Hall. The Mayor extended to the delegates a welcome to the city. Mr B. J. Jacobs, of Palmerston North, was voted to the chair. The report ami balance sheet were adopted. The following motion was passed relative to the’ illness of the King, “That this annual conference of New Zealand ex-servicemen desires to express to His Majesty the King our gratification Upon his Majesty’s return to health.”
