PERSONAL.

Mr Roy Cole is an inmate of the Levin private hospital where he underwent an operation for acute appendicitis. Latest reports are. that he is progressing satisfactorily. ' A recent issue of the Waipukurau Press contained the following reference to a former resident of Levin, from which it is evident tha,t he has lost none of his energy or public spirit. At the close of .the monthly meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council, held on Monday night, the Mayor (Mr R, McLean) paid a warm tribute to'the service rendered the Borough Council and the community generally by Mr A. C. Holms in his capacity as editor of the-“ Press,” and a citizen. The affairs of the council, he said, , had ceived the fullest possible publicity, ably recorded, and impartial treatment had been meted out to all concerned, while in all civic matters he had taken a keen interest. He regretted that indifferent health had brought about the retirement of Mr Holms, and, on behalf of the council, wished him well in his future sphere of usefulness. The sentiments of the Mayor were heartily endorsed by Crs. John Warren, W. Johnstone, and D. B- Kent, special reference being made to the standard ot excellence reached' by the “Press,’ and the service of Mr Holms as a member of the executive of the Chamber of Commerce. Mr J. E. Hall on behalf of the provincial press representatives also added a generous tribute to the worth of the retiring editor. Mr Holms appreciatively acknowledged the kindly and complimentary remarks that had fallen from the various speakers, observing that to be public-spirited was only natural after a- lengthy period of local body and semi-public service in the Wairarapa and Horowhenua districts. The specially liberal provision of news space by the “Press” had been a very helpful factor. He thanked the Borough officers also for their co-oper-ation. ■
