PRIEST SPEAKS HIS MIND.
OBJECTS TO JUDGE’S SENSATIONAL SUGGESTION. SCENE IN WEST MAITLAND COURT <By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day.
Rev. Father O’Gorman, parish priest, -caused a scene in the West ■ Maitland Circuit Court yesterday. He took exception to the remarks of Mr Justice James, who had said he often wondered whether skilled medicos should not be permitted to perform certain operations, as at the present time men who caused girls disgrace generally escaped scot-free, whereas the girls were faced with shame.
Father O’Gorman rose in the Court, and indignantly exclaimed, “I publicly protest in the name of this town against your remarks about legalising abortion. It is outrageous. It. is the sort of thing done in the slums of Turkey.” Mr Justice James replied courteously, “I merely expressed an opinion, and you, as a minister of religion, must have wondered too.”
Father O’Gorman, without further .ado, left the Court.
