MANGAHAO HYDRO NOTES.

Mr Gibson, Inspecting Accountant of the Public Works Department head office was a visitor to the works dur-

ing the week. Mr McDougall has been appointed foreman of all cookhouses on the works, mid has taken up his duties. The local branch of the N.Z.W.U. arc at present considering the taking over of (lie Arapcti cookhouse and running it under a co-operative system. The board charged lit all cookhouses last month amounted to 27/6 per week. Quite a, number of the men are meeting the h.e.l. by “baching." Mr Grayndler (general secretary, N.Z.W.U.) came up from Wellington for a special meeting on Sunday and spoke to a,large audience concerning the compensation claims on behalf of Ihe dependents of the victims of the late disaster that Ihe Union is making against the Government. The Entertainment Committee have the Christmas festivities well in hand, ami it is intended to hold a monster Christmas tree and social for the,children -at the school break-up, and the finish of the work for the year will be celebrated by a grand bachelors' dance. Each of the functions will be held in the Y.M.C.A. recreation hut, and capable sub-committees are arranging the details to insure succe&s. The camp has had its’full share of wet weather during the past week or two, and the married families housed (?) in tents have had a particularly uncomfortable time. Good progress is being maintained in all sections of the Job despite the bad weather experienced.
